Plenty of people see Macon from I-75 on the way somewhere else. Here’s what they’re missing, and why it’s worth a night or two.
A national park in the making
At Ocmulgee Mounds the Great Temple Mound rises 55 feet, and the floor of the Earth Lodge was carbon dated to the year 1015. Eight miles of trails run through the park. A bill in Congress would make it Ocmulgee Mounds National Park, Georgia’s first.
Where the legends started
Little Richard was born here. Otis Redding grew up here, and James Brown recorded his first demo here. The Allman Brothers Band’s Big House is their museum now, and the Capricorn studio is recording again.
A city that turns pink
More than 300,000 Yoshino cherry trees bloom every March, and the International Cherry Blossom Festival runs for ten days. It drew more than 200,000 people in 2025.
Seventeen historic districts
More than 6,000 historic buildings stand in Macon’s 17 National Register districts. Hay House, finished in 1859, is a National Historic Landmark.
A river through the middle
The Ocmulgee Heritage Trail follows both banks of the river for more than 13 miles and reaches into the Mounds. Amerson River Park has 180 acres and a two-mile tubing float.
Big shows, and a bigger stage coming
The Atrium Health Amphitheater holds 12,000 people and drew more than 100,000 fans in its first year. A new downtown arena with more than 10,000 seats broke ground in July 2026.
Don’t just drive through. Stay the night.
Most of Macon’s visitors come for the day and head home. Give it two, and it opens up:
Day one
- Morning at Ocmulgee Mounds: climb the Great Temple Mound and step inside the Earth Lodge.
- Lunch at H&H Soul Food, the Allman Brothers Band’s old favorite.
- Afternoon at the Big House Museum and Mercer Music at Capricorn.
- Evening: a show at the Douglass Theatre, or live music at Grant’s Lounge.
Day two
- Morning at Hay House, then a walk through the historic district.
- Midday at the Tubman Museum.
- Afternoon on the river: the Heritage Trail, or a float at Amerson River Park.
- A dog from Nu-Way Weiners on your way out of town.
Closer than you think.
Macon sits where I‑75 meets I‑16, 84 miles from Atlanta and about 75 minutes from Atlanta’s airport. Take the exit.
